Are Girl or Boy Goldendoodles Better?

Goldendoodles are a hybrid breed, created by crossing a Golden Retriever with a Poodle. The combination of these two breeds makes for a loyal, friendly and intelligent dog, and a very popular choice among families! While some may prefer one gender of Goldendoodle over the other, there is of course no such thing as a better gender of dog(kind of like people!). Ultimately, the best Goldendoodle for you and your family will depend on your lifestyle and what traits you are looking for in a pet.

Male And Female Goldendoodle Weight and Sizes

When it comes to male Goldendoodles, they tend to be slightly larger than their female counterparts. On average, a male Goldendoodle weighs between 30-35 pounds and has a strong, muscular build that can make them appear quite larger than females.

Female Goldendoodles tend to be slightly smaller than males and weigh between 25-30 pounds on average. They also typically have an overall slender build in comparison.

The size of a Goldendoodle is also determined by the size of its parents. If both the golden retriever parent and the poodle parent are standard size, the offspring will be larger than if the parents are of miniature or toy size. Additionally, some Goldendoodle breeders will do what's called a “doodle cross”, which is a combination of a golden retriever and a poodle of different sizes. For example, a doodle cross may involve a golden retriever and a miniature poodle, resulting in a smaller Goldendoodle.

Types of Goldendoodles

The size of Goldendoodles can range from the very small Toy Goldendoodle to the large Standard Goldendoodle.

Standard Goldendoodles are typically between 17 and 24 inches tall and weigh between 60 to 80 pounds up to 90 pounds. They are the largest Goldendoodle size and are great for larger families or those looking for a companion for intense outdoor activities.

Micro Goldendoodles are typically between 13 and 18 inches tall and weigh between 12 and 18 pounds. They are just a slight bit smaller than the Mini and perfect for those looking for a small-sized dog with a playful and loyal personality.

Toy Goldendoodles are typically between 11 and 16 inches tall and weigh between 10 and 16 pounds. They are one of the smallest available Goldendoodles and ideal for those wanting this dog breed brought down to size!

Teacup and Micro Teacup Goldendoodles are typically between 7 and 14 inches tall and weigh between 4 and 13 pounds. They are the perfect size and look for the ultimate globetrotter — as they travel easily and in style!

How a Male or Female Goldendoodle Might Fit into Your Life

There are unique advantages to both genders, and the best choice for your family will depend on your individual preferences, pet ownership goals and lifestyle. As mentioned above, Male Mini Goldendoodles tend to be larger than Female Goldendoodles, with males averaging between 30 and 35 pounds, and females averaging between 20 and 25 pounds.

Some dog owners have the opinion that males are more aggressive than females, however, this is not scientifically true and more likely to be a sign of an unnoticed medical issue or lack of training. It is best to consult with a veterinarian if you notice signs of aggression in your dog. Most of the time though, aggression is a sign of a lack of socialization, so it is important to make sure your dog is being properly socialized in a healthy environment (you can read up on How We Socialize Our Goldendoodles and please feel free to get in touch with us for more tips on how to socialize your dog!).

In terms of temperament and personality, there can be some differences between male and female Goldendoodles, but these variations may simply be due to the individual personalities of each dog! (again, just like people!)

Male Goldendoodles also have a reputation for being somewhat more independent and somewhat less affectionate than female Goldendoodles, which can be a positive or a negative depending on the type of personality you're looking for in a pet. Of course, even this type of behavior can be practically unnoticeable unless you're looking for it with a trained eye. Male or female, they're dogs, not cats!

Male Goldendoodles can also be considered a bit more athletic than females, and tend to have larger muscles, bones and paws. They also tend to be a bit taller than females, and are also likely to have broader shoulders. The difference in size is typically limited to around 10%. And of course, none of this implies that a male Goldendoodle will be any more aggressive than a female, as discussed above.

But the thing about male Goldendoodles is that they actually need more exercise than females! This is because males on average have a higher body weight and thus require that additional degree of working out to stay healthy. If they're not getting enough exercise, they may end up being more alert or active to burn that energy! A well-exercised Goldendoodle will also be less active and more relaxed, and the best way to keep your dog active is to simply walk them every day. You can also give them puzzle toys to stay engaged while at home, which are great for their mental development!

In general, female Goldendoodles are considered more docile than males. They can be easier to train due to this disposition, but again — every Goldendoodle (and dog, and person!) is unique! Female Goldendoodles also tend to be smaller and more petite than males, which can be an advantage if you are looking for a slightly smaller dog. On the other hand, female Goldendoodles can sometimes be quite active and very alert of their surroundings, which may require a little extra attention to manage in certain situations.

It's important to consider your own energy levels when deciding which gender of Goldendoodle is best for you. If you lead an active lifestyle with plenty of outdoor time, recreational activity and adventuring, it might be perfect for a Male Goldendoodle — which tends to have higher energy levels and may require more exercise and stimulation than a female. On the other hand, if you like to lead a quiet life at home and enjoy staying in with the occasional outing, a female Goldendoodle is more likely to fit right into your life. Of course, this is all relatively speaking, meaning that they're dogs after all! Both genders love the best of both worlds, and the real beauty of Goldendoodles — is that they're such darn naturals at making the absolute best of YOUR life!

Neutering/Spaying Your Goldendoodle

When it comes to neutering or spaying a Goldendoodle, there are a few factors to consider. While Goldendoodles may be one of the most desirable breeds, they can still exhibit undesirable behaviors just like any breed of dog, especially if they are not trained properly. Neutering is a common practice that can help to reduce certain behaviors in your Goldendoodle, such as roaming during heat cycles.

Overall, neutering/spaying can be beneficial for both male and female Goldendoodles. It can help reduce certain behaviors that are driven by hormones, as well as certain medical conditions. Additionally, it can helps reduce the risk of your Goldendoodle developing long-term behavioral issues.

As far as when it's the right time to spay or neuter a Goldendoodle, it is recommended that males be neutered at around 6 months of age and females be spayed at or around 12-16 months of age. However, these ages can vary depending on the size and breed of the Goldendoodle. Before deciding to neuter or spay a Goldendoodle, it's important to consult with a veterinarian to ensure that the procedure is right for your dog.

Neutering/Spaying can also help reduce the risk of Goldendoodles becoming lost or injured due to wandering. Intact male Goldendoodles are especially prone to wandering in search of a female in heat, and this can lead to them being lost or injured in the process. Neutering can help reduce this desire to wander, which can help keep your pup more predictable and safe.

Male Goldendoodle Behavior After Neutering

For male Goldendoodles, neutering can reduce certain impulsive and sporadic behaviors that are driven by their hormones. For example, neutering can help reduce aggression towards other male dogs, as well as the desire to roam and mark their territory. Additionally, neutering can even help reduce your male Goldendoodle's risk of developing prostate issues and testicular cancer.

Female Goldendoodle Behavior After Spaying

For female Goldendoodles, spaying can help reduce the risk of certain medical conditions, such as uterine infections, ovarian cysts, and mammary tumors. Neutering can also help reduce the risk of your female Goldendoodle exhibiting behaviors related to her heat cycle, such as restlessness and vocalization, as well as long-term behavioral issues such as aggressiveness towards other female dogs.

Do Male or Female Goldendoodles Prefer Male or Female Owners?

There really is no certain answer to this question, as each Goldendoodle is an individual — and will have its own preferences and personality! And there definitely is no scientific consensus that a male Goldendoodle will prefer a male owner or vice versa in the case of female Goldendoodles. The most important thing to consider is your lifestyle and that a male dog may prefer and actually benefit from a more active lifestyle, while a female dog may be more suitable for a more balanced lifestyle with less need for activity. And again, all dogs are wonderfully different! You may have a male Goldendoodle that needs to be carried out of the house, or a female Goldendoodle that doesn't want to stay inside! But these are just playful exaggerations — especially in the case of the Goldendoodle, which tends to be such a happily balanced and adaptive dog In any home!

Goldendoodle Temperament

Goldendoodles are friendly, outgoing and highly social dogs. They tend to get along well with both people and other animals, and love being around their family. They are incredibly loving and affectionate, and bond quickly with their owners. Goldendoodles have high energy levels and love to play and explore their surroundings, but they also love to relax, loaf around and keep you company as you do the same. They're very intelligent, easily trained, and thrive with positive reinforcement and consistent training.

Goldendoodle loyalty and protectiveness is some of the most notable in all of the dog world! The well-being of their owners and families seems to be their top priority — when they're not too busy showing off their affection and loyalty as if they're trying to impress! Goldendoodles require regular grooming, as their coats can become matted if not taken care of. Regular brushing and haircuts will help keep their coats looking healthy and beautiful.

Like most dog breeds, Goldendoodles do not do well when left alone for long periods of time. They need to be around their family and other people to stay healthy, so it's very important to provide them with plenty of social, mental and physical stimulation to give them the best life.

As a very smart dog, Goldendoodles can be a bit demanding and strong-willed, so it's important to establish a consistent and firm training regimen that lets them know all good things come to good dogs! They respond well to positive reinforcement and consistent rules, so it's important to remain consistent when training them.

Overall, Goldendoodles are famous for their loving and loyal personalities. They are friendly, outgoing, and highly social dogs that truly enjoy sharing in your life and the people in it. For all these reasons and more, they make exceptional family pets — and outright family members!

Should You Get a Male Or Female Goldendoodle?

When considering which gender of Goldendoodle is best for you and your family, it is important to remember that each individual dog is unique. While certain gender traits may be more common in one gender than the other, it is ultimately up to you to decide which Goldendoodle is the best fit for your lifestyle. It is also important to remember that Goldendoodles are social animals and do best when they are around people and other animals. When purchasing a Goldendoodle, be sure to ask the breeder questions about the puppy's personality and energy levels to ensure that you get the right fit for your family!

No matter which gender of Goldendoodle you choose, expect to have a loyal and loving companion in every way. Goldendoodles thrive on plenty of exercise, cuddles, and attention, and need to be socialized and trained from a young age. They are also very adaptable and can fit into many different lifestyles, and are very devoted to their owners, which also makes them great therapy dogs. So whether you choose a male or female Goldendoodle, you can expect to have a long and happy life with your new best friend.
