Director of Veterinary Affairs
Dr. Joanne Fernandez, DVM is a versatile veterinarian with a unique background in marine biology and specialized training in small animal medicine. A graduate of North Carolina State University's College of Veterinary Medicine in 2014, she brings a diverse skill set spanning small animal practice, wildlife rehabilitation, and advanced medical specialties.
Her academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Puerto Rico, where she focused on coastal marine biology and graduated magna cum laude. During her veterinary training, she completed selective blocks in advanced areas including fish medicine, raptor rehabilitation, and zoological health.
Dr. Fernandez has extensive experience across various veterinary settings, including internships at the Florida Veterinary Referral Center and work at Banfield Pet Hospital. Her professional interests encompass small animal, avian, exotic, and aquatic medicine, with additional expertise in ophthalmology, internal medicine, and dentistry.
Her commitment to professional development is evident through numerous externships, including experiences at the Carolina Raptor Center, Georgia Sea Turtle Hospital, and international programs like the AquaVet course. She has presented research at multiple conferences and published a scientific journal article titled "Calibrating the chitons (Mollusca: Polyplacophora) molecular clock with the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome C oxidase I gene."
Currently, Dr. Fernandez works as a relief veterinarian, offering her expertise through pet telemedicine and supporting veterinary clinics with relief work and digital marketing services. Her multilingual skills and diverse background allow her to serve a broad range of animal health needs while continuing to expand her professional horizons. Beyond her professional pursuits, she remains passionate about marine biology, ecology, and sustainable living, reflecting her holistic approach to veterinary medicine.
